Not without a reason Doxycycline belongs to so-called broad-spectrum antibiotics, because the number of bacteria, the growth of which is actively suppressed by doxycycline, is very large. Doxycycline is of great value because the same disease, such as pneumonia, may be caused by hundreds of various bacteria. In situation, when diagnosis is established, and a pathogenic organism is unknown, a wide range of doxycycline action reduces a risk of medical error. At the same time there is a whole list of known microbes that cause very serious illness, which can be treated with doxycycline: staphylococcus and streptococcus, dysenteric bacillus and salmonella, gonorrhea and syphilis agents (gonococcus and pale spirochaete accordingly). In addition to bacteria, doxycycline efficiently acts on rickettsia (typhoid agents) and mycoplasma. The ability of doxycycline to suppress the reproduction of clamydia is especially important. Doxycycline acts as follow: the medication penetrates into the cell and breaks protein synthesis. Microbe loses activity and reproductive capacity and not only that it is killed soon, but it "falls an easy prey" to cells of human immune system. So, obviously, this drug should be present in your medicine chest!
